Adding storage to a system you already have

Plenty of Cardiff homes have had panels for years with no storage. Adding a battery is usually possible, but it is not a single standard job — it depends entirely on what is already installed.

AC-coupled or DC-coupled

AC-coupled is the common retrofit route: the battery has its own inverter and sits alongside the existing one, which stays exactly as it is. DC-coupled means replacing the existing inverter with a hybrid, which is tidier and often more efficient but is a bigger job.

Which is right depends on the age and condition of your current inverter. If it is near the end of its warranted life anyway, replacing it with a hybrid may be the better value.

What gets checked first

The existing array's condition and string layout, the inverter make, model and age, the state of the isolators and cabling, the consumer unit capacity, whether there is a suitable location for the battery, and what your monitoring currently reports.

No installer can tell you a retrofit is straightforward from a photograph. If one does, that is a reason to get a second quote.

Metering and export

A retrofit can change what your meter sees. If you have an existing export arrangement, check with your supplier how adding storage affects it before the work goes ahead.
